NTT DOCOMO Ventures Invests in Biome Inc., an Operator of a Biodiversity Big Data Platform

Biome Inc. is a startup that aims to build a biodiversity information platform handling real-time data on the distribution of living organisms around the world. Biome, a living organism collection app developed and operated by the company, has been downloaded more than one million times*1 and, as one of the largest*2 big data platforms in Japan for information about living organisms, it is currently being used in a variety of nature-positive projects.

Of the total value added*3 within the global economy, some USD 44 trillion (almost half of global GDP), depends on natural capital*4 such as forests and soil. However, the degradation of biodiversity, which supports this natural capital, is progressing at an unprecedented rate*5. The transition to a nature-positive economy that incorporates the concept of nature conservation is a global challenge, and the Ministry of the Environment estimates that it will create business opportunities worth 47 trillion yen annually by 2030*4.

To ensure the natural environment is preserved for future generations, the NTT Group takes a close interest in nature in the course of its business activities and those of its employees, and is also engaged in ecosystem conservation initiatives.
In conjunction with this investment in Biome Inc., on March 27 (Thurs), 2025, five NTT Group companies (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, NTT Communications Corporation, NTT Comware Corporation, NTT DATA Japan Corporation, and NTT DOCOMO, INC.), together with Biome Inc., announced*6 that they would begin development of technology for using satellite data to estimate vegetation and living organisms over wide areas. Through this investment, the NTT Group will deepen its collaboration with Biome Inc., and will work to create new value through initiatives for nature-positive business and collaboration in research.
